Plan B for Globe Trading Company Complex

William G. Milliken State Park and Harbor has received a $25,000 grant from Coca-Cola, the American Parks Foundation and the National Park Foundation. The money will be used to turn the Globe Trading Company building into a 17,000 square-foot play area.

Instead of converting the space into market-rate condominiums and retail space, the building will contain a rock climbing wall, playscape, obstacle course and a state-of-the-art archery range.

It remains to be seen where the additional funds needed to complete this project will come from.

*UPDATE*

It turns out that the plan only calls for a portion of the building to be used for the playscape. A private developer will develope the rest. M-Bike.org has posted a few renderings of the  building developed by the DNRE.

This is bull crap. I and many others would have loved to live in this awesome building. -And in the middle of a state park on the river! Do we really need another rock-climbing wall?

With all the housing left to rot and/or being destroyed in Detroit, I'd say yes, we do need more things that aren't housing.

I agree with Blade. Get Detroiters and SE Michiganders moving! Call me ol' fuddy duddy. There is more to life than your telephone, twitter & facebook. (BTW I know how to use my phone for excel, WP, stupid photos & more importantly as an external storage device). So It is OK to label me as just fuddy duddy but you can add "ol'" anytime you want to.

Look folks, the USA would not exist today without these places, the UAW, and Auto Pioneers. Detroit, Buffalo, Pittsburg and other early innovation centers of Democracy are denigrated daily; (by design and with specific intent to demoralize) by the Soviets, Socialists, Japanese, Chinese and etc. that lost the physical Wars. Now it is time to Celebrate the USA, the Arsenal of Democracy, and all the innovators that built their careers on the shoulders of rock solid Innovators. The current War is Economic and Intellectual Property that many countries have been systematically stealing from the USA.

If Peter and his many others REALLY wanted to live in this Awesome Building 'in the middle of a state park on the river', they probably could have purchased it inexpensively, began paying Property Taxes, and then figuring out that gosh, it takes money to make things happen.
