I thought that there was something in the title to Ford Auditorium that it couldn't be torn down... how typical.

What will happen to the Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ inside? Has it already been removed? Or will it be reinstalled at Detroit Symphony Orchestra Hall? Does anyone know?

It needs to be demolished. This area could be utilized as a much needed greenspace on the riverfront. A nice outdoor amphitheater could be a great addition for the jazz fest as well.

I guess all this was was the former Mayor talking more smack.

Yeah, that's what it looks like. I don't see anything coming of this until a permanent mayor takes the helm, and then it may not even be an issue on that mayor's radar.

It is now a done deal. City Council approved the demolition this afternoon. They expect it to be done within the next 150 days.

I regret I never got the chance to hear a concert there. I've heard the acoustics were 'controversial'. Still, that the Aeolian-Skinner organ will be saved is a small triumph for the people and city of Detroit. That instrument is like a vintage car, beautiful, regal and impossible to replicate or replace. Whatever one may think about the city using funds to demolish the building, their salvaging of the pipe organ is commendable beyond dispute. Let's hope the site where Ford Auditorium is now located will be put to exceptionally good use.

As a college student attending Wayne State I took an impossibly hot girl on a date there to See Ella Fitzgerald perform.
