Buffalo Wild Wings Set to Fly into Detroit

Diversified Restaurant Holdings of Southfield have announced that they will be bringing a Buffalo Wild Wings franchise to downtown Detroit. The 12,000-square-foot restaurant will occupy three floors of the Temple of Odd Fellows Building at the corner of Randolph and Monroe. The building was built in 1874. Reconstruction will begin in April for a projected November opening.

You may recall that the City tried to have the building demolished in 2008 after high winds caused the back of the building to collapse in April of that year. The City later relented.

I spotted this house under construction in 2008. It was built just east of Eastern Market by two graduates of the master's program at the Cranbook Academy of Art as part of their thesis project on affordable single family housing. The 900 Square foot home had a budget of $60,000 and was constructed using cinder blocks and a rubber-coated roof.

The attempt to bring a Shield's pizza restaurant back to Detroit has ended up in a large pile of dough owed to the bank.

The Troy-based chain left Detroit, where it started, in the mid-1980s and focused on suburban growth. In 2007, the chain announced plans for a franchise to open a street-level eatery at the Kales Building Lofts at downtown's Grand Circus Park.

The plan never came to fruition. Earlier this week, the lenders of an $819,000 loan filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court charging the investors behind the downtown plan defaulted on the loan signed in 2008. The outstanding balance is $798,777, according to the suit.

Way back in 2007 Paul Andoni, co-owner of Shield's Franchise Restaurants LLC, announced that Shield's Pizza was returning to Detroit. The company began to build out space on the ground floor of the Kales building for a summer 2007 opening. That never happened. Construction stalled due to an issue with the exhaust ventilation that necessitated the installation of a 19-story shaft to the roof.

As late as June, 2008 Andoni still planned to open the bar and resturant at the Grand Circus Park location. At some point afterwards a "Construction has been halted" sign was posted and space was abandoned. This recent sign confirms the obvious. Shield's has abandoned the city once more.

One of the "Features" of this performance space is a showcase for art. This showcase consists of graffiti painted on the interior of the 120 year old building.

According to Moxie "The juxtaposition between the old architecture and the new graffiti and street art is compelling." Really? Defacing the interior of a beautiful, viable building is compelling? It's not even remotely acceptable! Will vitaminwater, which is underwriting this atrocity, pay to have the interior restored when their event disappears June 18? I don't think it is very likely.

The reconstruction of Capitol Park is complete and I will have to agree with the majority opinion, it is nothing special. I was underwhelmed by the design when I walked through it last week. The one thing that it did have going for it was the lack a homeless people milling about. If the new park is to become a catalyst for the regeneration of that section of downtown, as intended, that is an important first step.

Governor Rick Snyder signed a bill this week approving $102 million in grants to the Natural Resources Trust Fund. Close to $35 million from that grant will go to William G. Milliken State Park and Harbor, Detroit Riverwalk and the Dequindre Cut. The following acquisition projects were recommended for funding:

$20 million would be used to acquire three to six large private inholding parcels and trail easements along the Detroit Riverfront as additions to the William G. Milliken State Park and Harbor.

$9 million would be used by the DNRE to acquire 48,000 square feet of built-out space in the
Globe Building for the William G. Milliken State Park and Harbor Adventure and Discovery
Center in downtown Detroit.

$5 million would be used by the DNRE to acquire public use easements and land acquisitions along the
Detroit River from the Ambassador Bridge to the MacArthur Bridge as part of a 5-mile-long
public greenway.

$375,000 would be used to acquire a 0.7-mile section of abandoned rail corridor in downtown Detroit that continues the Dequindre Cut north, connecting the Detroit Riverfront to the historic Eastern Market.

MGM has taken advantage of the time it spent in bankruptcy to re-brand the villains in its "Red Dawn" remake as North Koreans instead of Chinese. An attempt to court potential distributors prompted the change. Distributors were concerned that without changes, the portrayal could alienate the Asian superpower and affect their ability to do business in the country. The studio will spend about one million dollars to re-edit, re-dub, and digitally alter the film to remove as many Chinese references as possible. If MGM is unable to find a distributor the film could end up going straight to DVD.

It looks like the last vacant building on 100 block Watson street in Brush Park will be saved. The Devon building, built in 1905, is slated to be converted into four 1,300 square feet condos. With the rehabilitation of the concrete building, the restoration of this particular block will be complete. That's not to say that it couldn't use a few more buildings for infill. The art deco facade will be saved, but the rear of the building will be demolished and rebuilt with floor to ceiling windows. This will also make room for new garages to be build along the alley.

Construction is set to begin in the first quarter of 2011. However, work will not begin until all four units are sold. The expected price per unit will be $220,000.

The Ford Auditorium Renovation That Wasn't

It was revealed in today's indictments that there was a plan in place back in 2003 for a theater developer to purchase Ford Auditorium from the city and renovate it.

Derrick Miller was the point man for the city on the deal and is said to have like the offer. Following the meetings the developer commissioned artist renderings, developed a renovation proposal and obtained insurance quotes and an assessment on asbestos removal for the renovation.

After a great deal of time and money was spent on the proposal, Miller and the developer met again. At this meeting the developer was told that he needed to hire Bernard Kilpatrick in order to complete the deal with the city. The developer refused and deal collapsed.

The Free Press is reporting this afternoon that a deal will close within the next week to finance the conversion of the Broderick Tower into 120 apartments. The upper floors, with views of Comerica Park, are expected to be some of the most expensive rentals in Downtown Detroit.

For years now Michael Higgins or Fred Beal have declared that renovations are just around the corner so take this news with a grain of salt.

Does the Castle Building Have Secrets?

There seems to be a bit of controversy surrounding fire and the immediate demolition of the Luben Apartments.

At first, one would assume that this fire was not unlike other house fires in the neighborhood. Perhaps a squatter started a fire inside to keep warm, fell asleep and a stray ember ignited a floorboard? There has been talk of two people living in the back of the building for the past few weeks, which is where the blaze appears to have started, so that theory sounds plausible.

However, I heard another rumor on the scene today. Supposedly, the building was purchased recently with the intention of rehabilitating it but the owner went bankrupt.

The speed and manor in which the building was leveled is what is raising the most questions. The demolition team was already on the scene before the fire department had even left. Despite vigorous protests by neighborhood residents, the fire department insisted that the building had to be taken down to protect arson investigators that would return at a later date.

Armed police were on the scene while neighbors shouted at the demolition company. Dust supression was not used to prevent asbestos and other particles from becoming airborne. Apparently this job had to be done fast! Only the front of the building was ordered to be demolished. The facade was the only architecturally interesting feature of the building. Naturally, being seen as the only justification for saving the building, that was the first section to be toppled. The rear of the building remains standing and the rubble is still burning.

Was this an unfortunate accident, an insurance claim, or some sort of land clearance?

A Castle no More

Brush Park suffered another loss this evening. Luben Apartments, my favorite of all of the remaining buildings in the neighborhood that have not been rehabbed, has been demolished by the city.

A fire, probably caused by squatters, broke out early Sunday morning destroying a large portion of the early 20th century structure. DFD officials claimed that the building needed to be demolished in order to protect arson investigators that will be looking into the cause of the fire. *Photos ASAP*

William G. Milliken State Park and Harbor has received a $25,000 grant from Coca-Cola, the American Parks Foundation and the National Park Foundation. The money will be used to turn the Globe Trading Company building into a 17,000 square-foot play area.

Instead of converting the space into market-rate condominiums and retail space, the building will contain a rock climbing wall, playscape, obstacle course and a state-of-the-art archery range.

It remains to be seen where the additional funds needed to complete this project will come from.

*UPDATE*

It turns out that the plan only calls for a portion of the building to be used for the playscape. A private developer will develope the rest. M-Bike.org has posted a few renderings of the building developed by the DNRE.

Following upon the presumed theft of the bronze Edwin Denby plaque from the Brodhead Armory, scrappers might be at it again. Today, I noticed that the Dedication Plaque to the "Gateway to Freedom" sculpture at Hart Plaza is missing. The sculpture is a memorial to the Underground Railroad and has a companion piece entitled "Tower of Freedom" which is located in Windsor.

Maybe, the plaque is being repaired or replaced and was not scrapped. However, things being what they are right now, I am not all that hopeful.

It looks like Detroit Paper Place 2.0. is finally, slowly, moving forward. The Detroit Brownfield Redevelopment Authority approved incentive financing on a $70 million plan to turn the vacant Free Press building into residential apartments, office and retail space, as well as a health club on the upper floor.

The project still needs to find market rate financing, but the developers are hopeful. They believe that construction will begin in 2011.

Less than a day after it opened, the Mexicantown Bagley Avenue Pedestrian Bridge was vandalized, Michigan Department of Transportation officials said....

In fact, MDOT video cameras caught one woman as she used a colored pen to scrawl on a bench in the middle of the 400-foot-long bridge.

"Yes, it was me," said Oneida Jackson, a copy editor at the Detroit Free Press and author of the Sunday's "O Street" blog.

"I did it. If you see a person with a green pen ... dressed in black slacks and a red top, that's me. I was excited about the event and wanted to put my name on it."
Jackson eventually put away the marker and said "Oh, I guess I shouldn't be doing this," the tape showed. As a blogger, she has written about her efforts as a mom to raise her 16-year-old son and encourage citizens to be more patient and civil.

Henry Ford Health System is finalizing plans to make a $500 million investment in its flagship hospital in Detroit and expand the medical center's footprint across West Grand Boulevard, building a south campus with doctors' offices, research facilities and an education center....

The seven-hospital system also plans to lead a collaborative effort aimed at redeveloping a larger 300-acre section of Detroit's New Center neighborhood, turning it into a "Community Health Park." Henry Ford says it intends to work with developers to transform blighted land directly south of its hospital into a hub for mixed-use housing, retail and other commercial activity. It hopes these efforts will attract another $500 million in investment by outside residential and commercial developers.

Lawsuit claims U.S., Canada are stalling efforts to build 2nd span over Detroit River

Detroit -- The owner of the Ambassador Bridge has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Coast Guard as well as Canadian and American government officials, saying they are stalling efforts to build a second span over the Detroit River.

According to the suit filed Monday in U.S. District Court by the Detroit International Bridge Co., owned by Manuel "Matty" Moroun, and the Canadian Transit Co., a proposed competing bridge plan, the Detroit River International Crossing, violates a long-standing law passed by U.S. and Canadian governments settling ownership and maintenance of the Ambassador Bridge.

That included "the right to construct a new span to replace an older span that requires substantial maintenance to extend its useful life," the suit read.

"We feel that the U.S. and Canadian governments are constrained from interfering with the operations of the Ambassador Bridge based on acts passed by Congress and the Canadian parliament," said Phil Frame, bridge company spokesman....

As you know, former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is required by law to pay restitution to the City of Detroit based on 30% of his current income, benefits and gifts received. Sadly, we are back in court tomorrow to put an end to the prosecutor's goal to increase his restitution payments based on rumors and innuendo and not facts. We feel confident the facts will speak for themselves tomorrow.

It is ironic these court issue continues to be top news stories in Detroit as the new Mayor gives his State of the City address. Kwame Kilpatrick is the former Mayor and not the current Mayor. External to his court problems, former Mayor Kilpatrick's accomplishments for the City of Detroit speak for themselves, including new hotels, new private and public sector jobs, a new Riverfront, national and local special events in a then vibrant downtown Detroit, new parks and recreation centers, new casinos bringing valuable revenue to the City, cleaner streets and much more!

Why is former Mayor Kilpatrick a scapegoat for all?

I certainly hope that Mike Paul buys his client a new shirt for tomorrow's hearing just to avoid any confusion.

Apparently, second chair counsel for a certain felonious ex-mayor has had his feeling hurt and doesn't understand satire. He emailed Woodward's Friend a cease and desist letter this past weekend. That lawyer's only claim to fame is writing a notorious appeal on behalf of his client to halt his probation violation hearing. The filing was deemed "grossly noncompliant and inappropriate" by Judge Karen Fort Hood. His cease and desist letter was poorly written as well.
